2015 Indiana State Finger Style Guitar Championship

The Third Annual Indiana String Fest and Indiana State Finger Style Guitar Championship was held July 31st through August 2nd at the Brown County Playhouse in Nashville, Indiana. World renown featured performers and competitors filled the house for a full weekend of internationally acclaimed finger style guitar music and competition.

Twenty-eight competitors waited patiently for their turn to compete in the competition. The second round of competition consisted of the top five scorers from the first round.

2015 Wyoming State Guitar Champions Announced

Keith Taylor, Salt Lake City, Utah took top honors at the Wyoming State Finger Style Guitar Championship while Adam Kozlewski, Ogden, Utah won the Wyoming State Flat Pick Guitar Championship. Both competitions are sponsored by the Oyster Ridge Music Festival held in Kemmerer, Wyoming held July 24th through 26th.

Guy Benson, Salt Lake City, Utah won second place in the Wyoming State Finger Style Guitar Championship, while Brad Tew, Springville, Utah won third place.

2015 Mid-East Regional Dulcimer Champions Announced

Coshocton Dulcimer Days Festival celebrated three days of workshops, concerts and competitions June 19th through 21th at Roscoe Village in Coshocton, Ohio.

 

The Mid-East Regional Dulcimer Championships were featured during the Sunday concert.

 

Winners of the Mid-East Regional Mountain Dulcimer Championship are:

            1st Place:        Michael Vickey, North East, PA

            2nd Place:       Tish Westman, Beckley, WV

            3rd Place:       J.D. LaBash, Austintown, OH

 

2015 Southern Regional Autoharp Champions Announced

The Ozark Folk Center hosted the Annual Autoharp Workshops June 4 – 6, 2015 in Mountain View, Arkansas.  The Autoharp Workshops provide learning opportunities for all levels of autoharp playing skills.  Evening concerts featured workshop instructors along with their regular cast of local and regional bands.  The Saturday evening concert featured the contestants of the Southern Regional Autoharp Championship.

Winners of the 2015 Southern Regional Autoharp Championship are:

                 1st Place:               Marti Knauer, Springfield, Missouri

First Arkansas State Finger Style Guitar Champion Announced

Thumb Picking workshops, a Traditional Thumb Picking Guitar Contest and the first Arkansas State Finger Style Guitar Championship filled the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View, Arkansas with guitar players of all talent levels May 14th through 16th, 2015.

 

The Thumb Picking Workshops featured noted thumb picking guitarists Thom Bresh, Randy Buckner and Danny Dozier teaching the guitar styles made famous by Chet Atkins, Doyle Dykes, Jerry Reed and Tommy Emmanuel.  A Traditional Thumb Picking Contest was held during the weekend.

 

Ozark Folk Center Announces 2015 Southern Regional Dulcimer Champions

The Ozark Folk Center hosted the 38th Annual Dulcimer Jamboree in Mountain View, Arkansas.  The Dulcimer Jamboree provided workshops in both mountain and hammer dulcimers at all levels of playing skills.  Evening concerts featured workshop instructors along with their regular cast of local and regional bands.  The Saturday evening concert featured the contestants of the Southern Regional Mountain Dulcimer Championship and the Southern Regional Hammer Dulcimer Championship.

 

Remembering Tut Taylor 1923-2015

We were saddened today when word reached us about the death of longtime Dobro pioneer “Tut” Taylor.

Tut was a longtime friend of the Walnut Valley Festival and in the early days of Walnut Valley Festivals was an entertainer and staff member of the Walnut Valley Occasional paper.

Our webmaster informs us that all 469 artists and 504 contest winners to date are up in the new web site.  We still have a lot to add, but browse our history... we're sure you can lose some time!

Dan Crary - Coming Back to Walnut Valley 44

We want to send out our congratulations to the most recent addition to the list of hired artists for the 2015 Walnut Valley Festival, Dan Crary – legendary flatpicker and as of March 7th a card carrying member of the Kansas Music Hall of Fame.

Dan will be here in September (#36 for him?) with world class banjo musician Bill Evans and super songsmith Steve Spurgin.
