Walnut Valley Occasional

Reflections on 52nd Walnut Valley Festival
and Updates on WVF 53

All the trash has been picked up, all the equipment and trailers and stages have been returned to the warehouses, and all the surveys have been read. I want to thank you if you attended our 52nd Walnut Valley Festival, whether it was your first or 50th time. I have heard it said that feedback is like sandpaper (momentarily rough, but ultimately producing a more polished product) and I look at our post-Festival surveys in that way.

So many things went well in 2024, and there was an extraordinary level of positivity and appreciation for our Festival in your comments. There were also many great suggestions to improve the experience, and WVA staff will implement those we think are worthwhile. We can assure you that the new pocket-sized program, a result of your feedback from 2023, will return; I want to thank Karen Deal for all her hard work on the program layout.

I was pleased to see that our performer lineup was very well received, and I thank both our performers and our hardworking hiring committee for their excellent work. I can also say that the emerging list of next year’s performers is amazingly talented, diverse and multigenerational, and the number of bands new to Winfield will rise from its usual 30% to over 40%! That is LOT of new faces, and we hope you will welcome them in your usual enthusiastic way.

Our new tiered ticket pricing for children and teens made it much more affordable for families to attend the Walnut Valley Festival. We will continue that in 2025.

Shirt and mug designs were very popular. I want to thank River Rat Custom Print & Skate (Lawrence, KS) and Gallery Mos Taza (Harper, KS) for their efforts. We look forward to welcoming them both back in 2025. We had several new crafts booths and luthiers represented in the Paulette Rush Arts & Crafts Fair.

We loved how many new workers joined our crew. Whether this was your first year or you have been working at Festival for decades, I thank you for your efforts and dedication. We hope that we will see you back next September.

As always, we had some of the best pickers in the world win at our eight instrument championships. Acoustic Music Shoppe, a streamed variety show held in between contests at Stage IV, streamed ALL of the contest finals, and you can find links to those in our digital edition of the Occasional. We want to thank the Chapman Brothers and their crew for building a great program for our Festival-goers and for bringing the Walnut Valley Festival contests to viewers around the world. We also streamed Wednesday’s Champions Concert and the NewSong Showcases. Thanks to Stage 11’s David Hakan for managing that.

We have been putting together an amazing lineup of performers for our 53rd Festival, some of whom are featured in this newsletter. Aside from the official stages with hours of talented picking, we will have eight instrument championships, a juried arts and crafts fair, and some great food vendors. All designed to ensure you have a wonderful time at the Walnut Valley Festival in 2025!

Rick Meyer Stage Project

The City of Winfield, Cowley County Fair Board and Walnut Valley Festival are working together to create a permanent stage at Stage III, with a plaque recognizing Rick’s contributions to Winfield.  We need your help to complete this project. Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution to the fundraising campaign, and help us create a stage dedicated to Rick’s memory.

Larry Fleury, who captured the terrific images posted on Facebook and Instagram during the festival, compiled this wonderful recap video for WVF 52.  Festival favorite, Bing Futch added to the magic, writing the accompanying song while he was driving to Winfield this year.  We can’t think of a better way to show what Winfield is all about.

Chris Jones, “I am so impressed with the quality of submissions for NewSong Showcase; they really were exceptional. I love the process of discovering new songs, so I really appreciate the chance to curate NewSong Showcase on behalf of Walnut Valley Festival. Every year I’m so grateful to the outstanding judges who lend their ears and their hearts to the difficult task of determining winners, and who have compiled some really valuable feedback to get out to all the writers. I’m especially thankful to the songwriters who open themselves up every year and let us hear their work and their art.”

2024 Special Features

2024 Feisty Music Camp for Kids

7th Year of Feisty Music Camp Another Big Success!

Feisty Music Camp for Kids is the place for the next generation of bluegrass music lovers and
campground pickers. This camp features seven hours of interactive musical activities for
pre-K to 5th graders, including sing-alongs, folk dancing, make-your-own-shakers, instrument
playing, songwriting, jamming, and even performances by the kids themselves. This year, 140
kids participated in the various activities directed by Erin Mae and Aaron Fowler. Special
guests from the Main Stages even make their way to Feisty Camp for up-close and engaging
performances — you might have seen Common Chords, Tina Bergmann & Bryan Thomas,
Rick Faris, Crying Uncle, or Socks in the Frying Pan under the Big Top Tent at Stage 6! Andy
May’s Acoustic Kids came to inspire the younger kids to practice hard so they’ll be ready for
the big stage next year. Feisty Music Camp for Kids will be back next year, so bring the whole
family to make lasting musical memories together.

Feisty Music Camp for Kids is made possible by the contributions of many people. Special
thanks to:
Common Chords, Tina Bergmann & Bryan Thomas, Rick Faris, Crying Uncle, Socks in the
Frying Pan, and Andy May and the Acoustic Kids for performing for us, Carp Camp for leading the parade from Information Booth to Stage 6 each day, Three Trails West, Pink Elephant Camp, Dana Hamilton, Sarah Miner, Ernie Hill, Mark Heinrich, Dave Bellavia, Ann Gordon for volunteering with some of the activities, Laura Dungan, Kathy Jones, Sarah Miner, and Justin Lewis for helping with set-up, clean-up, and registration, Max Finkeldi, Charles and Florence Vincent, Henry Bellavia, and Caroline Blas — our junior helpers, Great Plains Dulcimer Alliance and Winfield Arts and Humanities for allowing us to borrow instruments for the kids to play, and most importantly, the Stage 6 crew for hosting the camp

Walnut Valley and D'Addario Partner to Recycle Strings

Did you know that musical instrument strings are not recycled through municipal recycling programs?  It is estimated that more than 1.5 million pounds of instrument string metal end up in landfills every year.  D’Addario’s goal is to help facilitate 100% recycling and upcycling of strings to minimize not just our own impact but the entire industry.  Walnut Valley is committed to collecting used strings to help reduce string waste and improve the conditions of our landfills, and we thank Stage 5 and 6 for taking part this year.  Be sure to look for these recycle canisters again at next year’s festival.  You will find them in the interior and other locations to be announced closer to WVF53, September 17-21, 2025.  Meantime, the recycle bins are located in our headquarters at 918 Main Street in Winfield, and next door at Bob’s Place. Check out D’Addario’s entire recycle program at daddario.com/playback/recycle
